Riikka Talvitie
Born 1970
Oboist, composerRiikka Talvitie first attracted attention in Finland as a skilful oboe player but since the mid-1990's she has more and more made herself a name as a composer. Talvitie was among the founders of the Uusinta Chamber Ensemble and has given the first performance to many new compositions. After taking her oboe diploma at the Sibelius-Academy, Helsinki, she has focused on her composition work and studied with i.e. Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy and, at the Paris Conservatoire, Gerard Grisey. Talvitie studied at Ircam in 2001-02. Her music has been played in all Scandinavian countries and even elsewhere in Europe.
Talvitie's music is an interesting mixture of post-Darmstadtian modernism and imagination, flowing in an original way. Talvitie often uses unorthodox line-ups but writes for more conventional combinations, too. The latter include Korunkaarros (1999), a delicious piece for cello and piano. Naturally Talvitie's interests also lie on her own instrument, the oboe. Her skilful musicianship is cleverly testified in Perspectives, a five minutes lasting solo that was written in 1997.
