Marching Piper for flute solo

(2010)

* Duration ca. 5’15’’

* Commissioned by The Finnish Flute Association with support of the Finnish Composers’ Copyright Society Teosto

*  First performance: Ylva Öhman, Flute, Espoo, Finland, November 7, 2010

Marching Piper was written for young flutists, to be performed at the Finnish Flute Association’s pedagogue days in November 2010. The frisky piece, based on a marching theme, offers a set of clear and useful new playing techniques, such as ”jet whistle” overblowing, flageolets, special trills and tremolos. Performing the piece also requires the use of external gestures: in addition to basic music, the footwork is also notated precisely thus demanding a good physical coordination and control of the body—a crucial part of the performance in which young musicians may leave their seniors behind!

Evening Gleam (Illanvälke) for 8 flutes

(2009)

* Duration ca. 5’

* Each part can be performed with any number of players

* First performance: Lauri Toivio & The Finnish Flute Association Ensemble, Pori, Finland, October 4, 2009

This work includes techniques such as tongue pizzicato and rams, jet whistles and harmonics. A contrasting piece to From a Newer World, this piece is more pastoral in feeling. Programming both pieces can help players understand how the same techniques can be used in slightly different ways to produce different feelings.
